Why I don’t make new year’s resolutions

Some people have already broken their new year’s resolutions. You know who you are! And it’s still January!

Don’t be hard on yourself though.

I haven’t set a new year’s resolution my entire life. My thought has always been that if I want to do something or have something, I just go out and do it or get it.

When I didn’t have much money, it wasn’t always easy to just go out and “get” something, but what I did was set my mind to it and do whatever it took to be able to afford it.

Sometimes it took a few days, sometimes a few years, but if I really wanted something (and I mean REALLY wanted something), then nothing was going to stand in my way.

Years later, I realised this was just a form of goal setting. I was setting goals and had never even known that was what I was doing. I was even putting very simple rules around how I set goals that I didn’t know I was doing.

Then when I started to look more and more into goal setting, I found that there was limitless information available and everyone seemed to have a different idea. I saw everything from writing it down and reading it three times a day through to chanting and meditating on the goal for two hours before sunrise.

I just became more confused!

It took me a long time to understand that there’s no one method that’s right or better than all the others. It all simply came down to what worked for me.

I think of it the same as property investing. There’s so much information out there that you just don’t know where to look. If you try and follow everyone’s advice, you just end up in a state of “analysis paralysis” where you simply don’t do anything at all out of the fear that you are going to do something wrong. That’s a terrible place to be.

Fortunately, I slowly understood that the methods I used when I was younger to achieve what I wanted were still perfectly logical and valuable. So over the years, I developed a framework based on what information I could relate to and what information I did not.

We’re all individual and we all have different ways of learning and doing things. We’re unique. So my advice in the new year is not to set a new year’s resolution just because everyone else is… set a meaningful goal that you really want and are willing to work towards.

Inside my new online course “Build Your Property Empire”, I go to big lengths to help people understand the importance of setting goals and put a very simple framework about how to go about it.

As my new year gift to you, I wanted to share that clip from the course so everyone has access to my simple goal setting formula that you can take and utilise right away.

I’d love to hear from you about what type of goals you have set for 2018! Are you looking to invest in property for the first time? Are you looking at increasing your property portfolio? If so, we can definitely help there too.
